I love every opportunity I have to join my german shorthaired pointer when he has a bird locked down tight. As I approach, I carefully monitor the breeze trying to identify where “exactly” the bird is located. I keep an eye on him to see if he is starting to question where the birds scent may have gone. His intensity usually assures me that I will soon be shaken by an exhilarating explosion of feathers.

Reading the wind and the dogs point is an important skill to aquire. Learning this will increase the frequency of better positioning for shots. Having said that, birds never lose the ability to surpise us which, I guess, is why we keep chasing them.
